The CROWN Act, which stands for “Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair,” is a law that prohibits race-based hair discrimination, which is the denial of employment and educational opportunities because of hair texture or protective hairstyles including braids, locs, twists or bantu knots. ‍This portrait program will encourages students to examine the beauty and cultural history of natural hair, leading them to create individual works of art that celebrates the beauty and uniqueness of textured hair and advocates against its’ discrimination in schools and the workplace. Students will learn how to create a large-scale portrait-using fundamental drawing skills as a means for utilizing the arts for social and political advocacy. ‍ ‍ This program is best suited for Middle School and High School scholars during summer and after school programs.
