Seeing Sound: Creating Graphic Score

During Seeing Sound: Creating Graphic Scores, participants will explore how information and ideas can be communicated through diverse media and formats through listening to and analyzing John Cage’s music, examining his visual artwork and graphic scores (some from the Cleveland Museum of Art Collection), and creating and performing original graphic scores using graphic notation. When creating their own graphic scores, students will consider how to visually represent elements such as rhythm, pitch, dynamics, and tempo before having the opportunity to perform their composition. Participants will also work to address the arts and social-emotional standards of composing musical ideas using standard and iconic notation and exploring new opportunities to expand their knowledge and experiences.
