History on Film: Observing and Analyzing Major Events as Presented in the Movies
Radio on the Lake Theatre’s History on Film program can be adapted to accommodate different age ranges in 5th-12th grade. Depending on the length and level of the program, students will observe history through one of the most powerful and creative of art forms, the motion picture. During each session, students will watch clips from classic and contemporary films covering a wide range of topics, including civil rights, the founding of the United States, space exploration, women’s rights, disabilities, World Wars I and II, Native Americans and many more. The first session will introduce the class to the development of film and show clips from silent and early talking pictures. Each subsequent session will encourage student discussion and participation about the topics, the depictions of the various characters, and historical accuracy. Students will be broken up into groups where they will discuss which clips had the most impact and create artwork about the various films and ideas for their own short stories about history.
The final project will be an audio podcast where the students will read their stories. Longer residencies will allow students to explore more films and topics as well as the intricacies of creating entertaining and important stories. The History on Film program is designed to heighten their understanding of history and provide an outlet for creativity while building and growing their knowledge of storytelling. All Radio on the Lake Theatre programming incorporates Social Emotional Learning. We strive to give students a space where they can create and think freely in a safe environment. This program - and all of our programs - are designed to give space for healing and growth in students so that they can use the artform as a learning tool. Radio on the Lake focuses on the power of empathy as a leading light in our programming. Students' increased self and social awareness through the exploration of their character work leads to strengthening skills in empathy.
