Local Cleveland artist, Shelly Svonavec, creates fine art paintings and mixed media pieces loosely reminiscent of various nature elements. Her goals don’t only lie in creating art but in working as an educator- reaching the youth through multi-disciplinary workshops meant to develop & inspire throughout the creative process.

Shelly has her Bachelors of Fine Arts from Bowling Green State University and has taught visual arts professionally in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Since moving back to Cleveland in August of 2017, Shelly has grown in the creative community with a Solo Exhibition at the Beck Center, murals throughout Ohio City, various group shows and displays, live painting performances for the Gordon Square Arts District, and commissions for private collections.

During this Ceramic Residency, the art teacher and Shelly will collaborate to build a foundational clay course for any grade! Shelly will walk the classroom teacher through all the ceramic supplies in the school, train them on how to fire an electric Skutt kiln*, and introduce various handbuilding techniques that the art teacher can utilize in the future.

This ceramic residency not only teaches the exciting art skills but integrates Social Emotional Skills along every stage: self control, persistance, and responsibility to name a few. Shelly can also customize the context of the project to fit any classroom or school wide goals/initiatives (ex. literacy, geometry, cultures etc.)

This residency allows for ALL students to thrive with a new medium and is an excellent collaborative learning experience for the art teacher.

CAL Sprouts
CAL Sprouts

CAL Sprouts is the Center for Arts-Inspired Learning's preschool multi-arts program. During this important developmental stage children are investigative learners as they curiously navigate their world. Exploration of their ability to create, communicate and collaborate with others through a variety of media occurs in every facet of their lives. CAL Sprouts captures this curiosity to spur children's growth through artistic and academic experiences. Working closely with preschool educators, CAL Sprouts has been created to connect learning through the arts to kindergarten readiness skills with a series of lessons and assessments that target the Ohio Department of Education's preschool assessment outcomes. Current artistic genre's available include Dancing Sprouts, Musical Sprouts and Illustrative Sprouts. Painted Poppies

Participants will have the opportunity to use a 2D visual arts technique to recreate 3D models of flowers.  Using the “scrape” method, paper will be dipped into warm colors and then the paint will be scraped across the page.  Participants will then cut 4 organic shapes from small to large and piece these together using a bracket.  These flowers can be used as decorations within the classroom as well as models for exploring the different parts of flowers and plants.

Identity Portraits
Identity Portraits

Identity based work that would encourage participants to analyze their personalities and produce a self-portrait that helps express themselves creatively. After portraits of each participant is photographed, they will trace it on a piece of acetate using a contour line method. We will analyze the artist, Kehinde Wiley, and create a dynamic background for the portraits using paint and collage on the back of the acetate.

Participants will be using their imagination, literary skills, and collaboration to create a unique monster character. They will be utilizing an innovative art technique by coloring a coffee filter with washable marker and creating 2 “watercolor” prints by sandwiching it between white paper. Once the prints are dry, participants will use this painted paper, construction paper, and glue sticks to compile a creative monster character. They will then work with their parent to develop this character and its background story.

Roy Lichtenstein Family Mantra
Roy Lichtenstein Family Mantra

This project will have the participants discussing family/community values, learning about Pop Art, and experimenting with innovative painting techniques. The result will be a Roy Lichtenstein-inspired family mantra word. Borrowing from his enthusiastic style, this piece is meant to be displayed and play the role as a daily reminder to live through your values.

After discussing family and community values, participants will decide on 1, all-encompassing word to create their work around. They will be introduced to the work of Roy Lichtenstein and create their art piece in the Pop Art style. Participants will then use various and innovative techniques at painting stations to create dynamic painted paper for their art. Using pieces of cardboard as spacers, they will layer these papers with the final layer being the chosen family mantra.
